Q. I followed the instructions for installation of D-Day, but when I access the missions on the historical tab I cant find the campaign for the Canadian Tempest?
A. In order to maintain a reasonable number of files in a single directory so that the list is not incredibly long, only one campaign set is installed at a time. The other mission sets can be found in the \Missions and Briefings directory in CFS 3. Simply delete the mission set in the Historical directory and copy and paste a new mission set into the directory.
Q. I began the Normandy campaign but the invasion didnt occur until June 10th?
A. If you do not have success in your early missions, you can set back the Allied cause. Restart the campaign if you want a historical invasion date.
Q. I started a campaign with the Tempest Mk V flying as a fighter-bomber pilot. Then I was given the Spitfire IXc as a new aircraft. I wanted to continue to fly the Tempest. Why was I assigned a new plane?
Unfortunately the campaign system has a mind of its own. If you want to continue to fly the Tempest you will have to request a new aircraft. You can do this as soon as you have 5000 prestige points.
Q. Why do old aircraft sometimes appear as new technology in the campaign news?
A. In order to ensure that you are assigned a certain aircraft on the first day of the campaign we had to fudge the introduction date of some aircraft. They will usually appear in the news on the second day of the campaign as new technology.
Q. Even though I ingress to the target at 20,000 feet, when I order my squadron to engage they descend as low as 2500 feet to release their bombs. This makes them vulnerable to AAA defenses.
A. The fighter-bombers in CFS 3 all show this behavior and unfortunately the only corrective available is to force them to approach all targets in level flight at 24,000 feet. We decided to leave them as is so that you can operate them as fighter-bombers when needed.
Q. When flying the FB VI I order my wingmen to engage enemy aircraft and they respond, Cannot Comply. What gives?
A. In the default installation of CFS 3 the FB VI is incorrectly defined as a tactical bomber. This means that the AI pilot doesnt know the aircraft has forward firing guns. If you fly the new D-Day Mosquito you will not experience this problem.
Q. It is really hard to keep the gunsite on a target in the air. My aircraft seems to want to rise all the time. What am I doing wrong?
A. In order to prevent this behavior you will have to trim your aircraft for level flight. Before you engage the enemy use the trim key (KP1 and KP7) to adjust the elevator trim.
Troubleshooting
Q. CFS3 crashes when I exit quick missions, and sometimes freezes after I crash an aircraft.
A. Delete the Uisel.xml file in the following directories:
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Microsoft\Combat Flight Simulator 3.0.
Then check if you have the following directory in your Combat Flight Simulator 3 directory:
WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Combat Flight Simulator 3.0
If this directory exists delete the Uisel.xml file there as well.
CFS 3 will generate a new updated file when you restart the game. This will solve many problems, particularly if you installed D-Day after Firepower or Battle of Britain.
Q. I installed D-Day and now I get the following error message when CFS 3 boots up: "can't load the campaign file 'NEK.XML'.reason:unknown country id Britain-fax."
A. First, ensure you have the latest version of the NEK. Next, open up the CFS3\NEK\D-Day 1944 Compatibility Update\ folder and run the dday_nek_update.exe program. The initial D-Day installer as well as the D-Day 1.04 patch replaces some files that the NEK is dependent on and the compatibility update corrects this.
You can find the NEK update HERE.
Q. When attempting to start CFS 3 I get a black screen. When I ran DEBUG I received the error message "invalid line 1 pos1".
A. The problem is in the terrdata.zip file in the /terrains directory. The terrain patch replaces that file with the original one from the CFS 3 CD. The terrain patch can be download HERE, but the better method is to download and install patch 1.04 which replaces the zip file with the original one from the CFS 3 CD.
Oddly, the zip file causing the error works fine on many systems, but not on ALL systems. So we missed the error in testing.
